Jaws Questions

1. Where did the idea for Jaws originate? How did it become a film? Who contributed to the screenplay?
Jaws had originated from the novel- ‘JAWS’ written by Peter Benchly who had been inspired to write the story after reading about a fisherman that had caught a 4,550 pound Great White Shark off Long island. After producers had read the book they had then got together with Spielberg and decided that they had to do the movie. Author Peter Benchly had then contributed towards the screenplay.  

2. Why were particular scenes removed from the film?
Some scenes from the film had been removed either because Spielberg felt that it didn’t work, was too violent or due to technical problems with the mechanical shark.

3. During the pre-production stage what sort of footage did the producers commission in preparation for the film? How was the script changed as a result of this footage?
The script had been changed to extend scenes as well as footage being taken of live sharks which made the movie more realistic.

4. What was involved during the casting process?
Lorraine (wife of Brody chief of police) had been the first person that Spielberg had cast as he found her to be a natural actress, other actors were offered the job as well as the character 'Quint' who had been cast after several offers.

5. What is location scouting? Why did Steven Spielberg choose the locations for the film?
Searching for a setting/ areas where most of the movie will be shot, they had found a town that was quiet and had never had a movie shot within that area it had scenery that if shot at the right angle would look like it was going out to sea.

6. Describe how actors contributed to the production of Jaws.
The actors had made a major contribution to the movie?
The actors had made a contribution by bringing each scene to life Spielberg found them all to be natural and talented actors and had followed every instruction asked by the crew. The naturalism of their skills was portrayed well through the scene with chief Brody and his son.

7. What does a composer do? What considerations were taken into account when writing the music for Jaws?

The composer had written the music for the film, by doing most of the music was used to represent Jaws and to maintain suspense throughout the production.

8. What did Spielberg do as a result of test screenings?

Spielberg had tested the screening for the first time at Dallas shopping centre anxious to see the audience’s reactions.

9. What is a director of photography? How was the director of photography involved in the production of Jaws?

The director of photography’s job involves the recording of the film and monitor that everything runs well.

10. What does an editor do? Who was the editor on Jaws and what was her responsibility?
It is their responsibility to make put everything together the film.

11. Based on the documentary, what are the responsibilities of a producer?
To make all the main decisions for the movie and make sure that everything runs smoothly.

12. What does the producer do once principal photography has finished?
The principal then runs through everything and is involved in the completion of the movie.

13. What did the production designer do on the film?
The designer job involves the scenery for the movie and some of the major props and costume.
